Ok so Layla’s 2nd Birthday is next week.

I think I should reflect on the plan.

Theme: things she love, mainly Trolls, but also Finding Nemo and Finding Dory, Frozen, Moana, Elmo and recently Zootopia, because it is mainly about a bunny. She has recently expressed her deep love of bunnies which I predict stems from having met a pet bunny one time in the summer.

Question:

How do I make all of this come together in a cake, and in a birthday party?

Solution:

1. Make my first ever 3 tiered cake,

2. mainly focus on Trolls as the decor theme,

So about a month ago I started trying to think and plan out her cake, I thought about possibly sculpting all of these figures out of fondant, and then I decided I was crazy to try that. I went online trying to find sets of themed toppers, I found a few listed on Etsy but they were quite costly, since at the time I also was thinking of featuring frozen. The next day I went to the dollar store in the city and what do I find?? A finding dory toy set that is small enough to be mini cake toppers.

Then last weekend I got a rare day to shop on my own again so I went on a hunt for Trolls decorations and toys, I went to dollarama, and dollar tree with no luck!! Getting frustrated I almost decided to change the theme to frozen, because they feature tons of frozen items at the dollar store. Then I remembered that Walmart had some Trolls decor, so I spent 20 minutes trying to decide which toy set would 1: suit the cake, and 2: keep Layla entertained. I finally chose one and found a table cloth I decided to hang on the wall as a cool backdrop feature to take some pictures.

As for the cake: I decided that the uniting color will be blue, it will be a 3 tiered cake, and will only feature Trolls and Finding Nemo.

I also went to Micheal’s and found a perfect and expensive 4 tiered set of cake pans and appropriate cardboard cake holders. Now I have to actually put this thing together.

Questions for further consideration:

1. Fondant or butter cream? I reassess this decision daily, on one hand fondant will be smooth and beautiful, and I need the practice, on the other hand I am already stressed about the structure of the cake and that I’m not that great at making fondant smooth and beautiful. But butter cream is too sweet and may not be as smooth and beautiful as I might want it to be.

2. Design? I spent a lot of time googling trolls cakes and Nemo cakes but I still have no clue what I want the cake to look like. The bottom tier of the cake will be an underwater Nemo theme, the middle tier will be some sort of transition maybe with grass and sky? The top will be trolls themes.

3. Structure: what if the cake won’t stay standing nicely??

4. Storage: where am I going to keep all this cake before and after the party?

5. What else should I bake? And how do I make it compliment the themes? Cookies maybe and pipe trolls on them? Meringues? Both? When will I have the time? Ahhahah

Stay tuned to see how everything turns out!
